Mt. Phonyin Razi – Towering 4282 meter above the sea is one of the most beautiful peaks to scale in the region. The unique pattern of Eastern Edged of Himalaya is extraordinary unique floristic region which can represent the region around the central Asiatic highland and continuous Eastern Edged of Himalaya. Generally covered with snow between November and May is about 80 kilometer North – East of Putao. The remoteness and difficult accessibility of the region has helped to maintain the pristine purity of it forest and eco-systems.

Draft Itinerary

Day 01:Arrival, transfer to hotel. Walking tour in and around Putao

Day 02:Depart by jeep to upper Shangaung, your adventure starts as you get off the jeep and start trek to Wasandum, a hallenging trek goes toward the shoulder of Mt, Shangaung. Wasandum is a small Rawang tribe village situates by Namro creek.

Day 03:Trek to our today destination at Ziyadum along the trail goes through lush evergreen forests and enjoyable scenery. Ziyadum is the most northwestern and last frontier village in Putao region and serves as base of Mt. Ziya, Mt. Phongun and Mt. Phangran and Mt. Phonyin.

Day 04:Trek to the confluence of Phonyin and Phangran creeks, cross Phonyin creek and trek along Phangran creek until we reached to camp I.

Day 05:Set off for camp II, along the route steadily ascending. Further trek to camp III, with the challenging trail steady up.

Day 06:Set off for base camp, through challenging trail winding up and down rapidly. The base camp situates rather awkward and not enough space available to pitch more than 2 tents.

Day 07:Early in the morning set off for the summit on the glacier from where one see a beautiful lake down. Enjoy the view of the many other snowcapped mountains in the region.

Day 08/11:Your return trip back to Putao. You will trek back using the same route passing Camp III, II and I plus village like Ziyadum and Wasandum.

Day 12:Explore Putao market and transfer to airport for your onward departure flight to conclude this unique experience.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01 : Arrival, Putao

Upon arrival at Putao airport we will be met by Putao Trekking House’s representative and transferred to our lodge. Putao lies in a flat valley, jumping-off point for trekkers who want to explore the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and snow-capped mountains etc. Putao town and fort was built during 1914-15 by Commissioner Mr. Hertz along with Fort which later known as Fort Hertz. Later a Missionary basing the Rawan and Lisu tribe as initial and introduce Grapefruit, Washington Naval, Vlincha Orange, Ruby Oranges, King Orange and King Mandarin plus America Lime were introduced. After a brief fresh up take a walk around Putao for the orientation. Dinner and overnight at Putao Trekking House.

Day 02: Putao - Shangaung – Wasandum - (elevation - min 457m – max 1630m)

Early in the morning we visit attractive Putao market. Later we depart by jeep to upper Shangaung, through the valley across several smaller villages and open fields. Our adventure starts as we get off the jeep and start trek to Wasandum, located at 867 meter above sea. This is considering a challenging trek as not only it goes toward the shoulder of Mt, Shangaung at 1632 meter. First 10 kilometers will be straight up along the trail winding up to the top of Mt. Shangaung from then trail goes all the way down to Wasandum located at the Valley of Namro River. Though the trek itself is challenging but we enjoy the trek goes deep in to primary forests where we see many birds and heard sounds of monkeys in the near distance. Wasandum is a small Rawang tribe village situates by Namro creek. Dinner and overnight at Wasandum village house.

Day 03: Wasandum - Awadum – Ziyadum - (elevation - min 865m – max 1050m)

Breakfast and we trek to our today destination at Ziyadum, located at 1050 meter above sea. At first we cross Namro creek to Awadum I, mainly inhabited by Lisu and separate in to two by a large paddy field. From here we walk pass vast paddy field to Awadum II, from here the trail goes through lush evergreen forests and enjoyable scenery towards Ziyadum. Ziyadum is the most northwestern and last frontier village in Putao region, mainly resident are Rawang tribes. After a brief fresh up we visit Ziya creek for a fantastic sunset view with a blazing snow Mountains in the west which spark in to steady flowing Ziya creek. Dinner and overnight at Ziyadum village house.

Day 04: Ziyadum – Camp I – (elevation min 1050m – max 520m)

Breakfast and we set off for camp I, located at 1518 meter above sea by the side of Phangran creek. After two hour walking reach to confluence of Phonyin and Phangran creeks. Here we cross Phonyin creek by bridge and keep trek up and down along Phangran creek until we reached to our today destination at camp I. We enjoy the site and sound of the surrounding while our crew prepare out night meal and camp. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 05: Camp I – Camp III - (elevation – min 1520m - max 3045m)

We enjoy morning beauty of the nature surrounding while our team prepare breakfast for us. Breakfast and we set off for camp II, situates at 2443 meter above sea along the route steadily ascending. Lunch stop and continue our today destination camp III, situates at 3046 meter above sea, with the trail mostly step up. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 06: Camp III – Base Camp - (elevation – min 3045m – max 3660m)

Breakfast and set off for today destination at base camp, locates at 3658 meter above sea. At this point trek become challenging going up and down rapidly. As we gain altitude the climb becomes deeper and strenuous. We reach the base camp after a hard and long day on the rough terrain. The base camp situates rather awkward and not enough space available to pitch more than a couple of tents. At this stage it’s not possible to make fire due to heavy snow and no firewood but we just have to get by with cooked meal using gas stove and stay freeze during the night. Dinner and overnight at base camp.

Day 07: Base camp – Summit – Base camp - (elevation – min 3660m – max 3660m)

Early in the morning we set off for the summit at 4282 meter above sea. Just about one hour climb to reach on the glacier from where we see a beautiful lake down. The view from this spot is spectacular as one literally standing one of the highest spot in the region and most of the other summits were right below you. At this stage weather change may be rapid then ever and the visibility getting limited to just a couple of feet with strong wind. Return back to base camp and spend another freezing night. Dinner and overnight at base camp.

Day 08: Base Camp - Camp III - Camp II

We bit farewell to Phonyin Razi and set off for our destination camp II passing by camp III. Our return journey will be no easier having descended quite rapidly although it was not as strenuous as up journeys. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day 09: Camp II - Ziyadum

We listen to the bird’s call and enjoy the environment. We have a rather relax morning as the distance to day will be much shorter. After early lunch and set off for Ziyadum through the trek ups and down the valley. After a last up hill trek we reached to Ziya plateau with a smoke from the farm which was the first sign of the civilization ever since we left Ziya one week ago. A warm shower by all mean was a greatest enjoyment. Dinner and overnight at Ziyadum village house.

Day 10: Ziyadum – Wasandum

Have a lazy morning and after an early lunch bid farewell to the villagers and head back to your today destination, Awadum crossing suspension bridges and through beautiful evergreen Avenues. Dinner and overnight at Wasandum village house.

Day 11: Wasandum – Shangaung – Putao

Having left the wilderness behind and returning to the clutches of human civilization. As soon as we start the trek goes challenging uphill to the plateau of Mt. Shangaung, before continuing rapidly downhill to Shangaung where our driver meets us and takes us back to Putao. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge.

Day 12: Departure

Breakfast and perhaps a last minute shopping at Putao market and further visit in and around Putao with suggestion by our guide. Lunch and we afternoon transfer to airport for our onward departure flight to conclude this unique experience.

Deposit and payment:

A deposit of 30% of your trip cost per person is require to secure your booking. The balance will need to be settled 7 day before commence of trek. Bookings made within 7 days must be paid in full at the time of booking.

Validity:

Prices quoted are net basis and valid according to the date specified on the printed tariffs, quotation, invoice etc. Myanmar Hill lodges (Myanmar Highland Eco-adventures) warrants that the prices or rates quoted are correct at the time of issuance but are subject to change in line with market, tax or currency fluctuation.

Cancellations and refunds:

All cancellations must be advised in writing and are accepted from the date the written confirmation is received and applied cancellation as below.
30 days before trip date: you will lose your deposit
15 to 7 days and less before the trip date: 50% of the total cost per person
Less than 7 days and less before the trip date: 100% of the total cost per person
If reservations are cancelled (or) no-show: no refunds will be made
NB: Depending on your reason for cancellation these charges may be recoverable on your insurance policy.
If the operator cancels tour due to unforeseen circumstance, refund will be made after deduction of 10% of the total cost per person to cover permit and other logistic expenses. However the operator will not be liable for any additional costs incurred.

Amendments:

We will try to accommodate your request within possible limit. A fee may liable if involve reapplication with a permit. Please note we may not be able to accommodate your request during “high occupation period”. In such case we will not be responsible for any lost or additional costs incur to you. Should trip be cancel after deposit cancellation fee may apply.

Grouping:

There is no limitation on the group size on this program, however Myanmar Hill Lodges (Myanmar Highland Eco-adventures) reserves the right to combine in order to form a decent group on same departure.

Flights:

Due to weather in mountainous region, irregularities of domestic flight schedule may affect your onward journey. We cannot be responsible for any charges you might incur as a result of these cancellations once you are in Putao. Should the schedule flight cancel on the planned date before depart to Putao then we will try to book next available flight. If this is not acceptable to you then a refund will be considered after deduction of 10% of the total cost per person to cover permit and other logistic expenses.

Un-used service:

No refunds will be considered any unused service after commencement of the tour, trek or expeditions regardless of the reason whatsoever.

Travel Insurance:

It is compulsory to take out your own personal travel insurance, which must cover adventure activities and include emergency evacuation as pre condition of booking. Full contact details of the insurance policy will need to be carried with you through the expedition. In addition, we will also ask you to sign a waiver form on certain trek, which will recognize your voluntary participation in an adventure activity, which carries a certain amount of inherent risk.

Checklist

Baggage:

As general rule when packing for wilderness expeditions keep personal gear to a minimum. Please avoid large framed suitcase as they can be rather cumbersome to porters but use a medium size duffle bag instead. The weight limit on domestic airlines is 20 Kg and only 2 x check-in bags and one carryon bag are allowed. Your day pack should be a medium volume without a frame which can hold your personal belonging such as medication, camera, extra clothes, water etc.

Clothing:

Should be lightweight, dry quickly, and provide insulation even when wet. The brushed nylon pants are ideal for low land trekking. Lightweight long sleeved shirt is useful as sunscreen and leeches protection while trekking. A good quality raincoat is ideal as it will keep you warm and dry in a variety of situations. Bring a thick sweater or fleece sweat shirt to wear in the evenings, when temperatures decline considerably. “GoreTex” waterproof pants and windbreaker are highly recommended as this trek involves high altitude climbing.

Foot ware:

Lightweight hiking boots or good quality running shoes are must for the lowland trek. For snow trek, snow boots, crampons, gaiters, additional socks, thermal hats and gloves are highly recommended. It is essential your walking boots be comfortable and broken-in.

Personal items:

Item such as flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries, water purifying tablets , lighter, pocketknife, reading and writing material and personal first aid kit would also be essential for your convenience.

Protection from weather:

A pair of sun glass and hat is essential for your protection from sun and snow glare. You will also need some sun screen to protect against sunburn.

Protection against insect bite:

Most part the jungle is free from biting insects, but we do encounter plenty of insects in the low land such as sand flies around the river banks and leaches in the lowland bushes. It’s important to use insect repellent to keep the insects away.

FAQ

What are the overnight facilities in Putao?

Putao trekking house operates bungalows build identical to local homes in the region using locally available materials. All rooms come with attached bathroom, hot and cold shower. Rooms are secure, lockable with windows offering scenic view. An elegant lobby includes bar area, fire place, dinning area and common area offers recreation and relaxation.

What are the overnight facilities during the trek?

This trek involves local home stay and tent accommodation. Western toilet facilities are installed in the villages. Night will be spent in candle light and wood fire. Limited amount of hot water will be supplied for face wash in every morning. When pitching a tent, two clients will share a tent, unless you have requested and paid for a single supplement.

What will be the temperature like?

Our season is between November and May, which is winter and best tourist season in Putao region. Mostly clear skies, warm during the day and cool evenings. Temperature steadily decreases between late December and early February. Average temperature would be between low 4/10 and high 22/30 degree Celsius but could drop steadily up to freezing up in the mountains.

How long is an average trekking in a day?

All our treks are designed at 4 to 8 trekking hours per day. Day normally starts at 8 or 9 in the morning follow by breakfast. Lunch usually is packed and light, followed by 2 to 3 hours more trekking in the afternoon. We try to reach our destination well before nightfall in time for fresh up and relax before dinner.

What will I see on the trek?

The eastern Himalayas are heavily forested, ranging from dense evergreen tropical into mix of subtropical in the valleys and temperate forest with pines mixed temperate forest, where trees are thickly padded with moss. This zone is recognizable by its precipitous ridges with sporadic patches of silver fir forest and broad, steep alpine meadows. Large parts of the day will be spent under the towering canopy of ancient rainforest and temperate cloud forest, or following cascading mountain streams. At other times there will be views of snowcapped mountains as we enter open areas of village habitation. There will be plenty of bird life, butterflies and other exotic flora and fauna on offer. Several species of Rhododendron, wild orchids, pine, rattan and bamboo are indigenous to this region. It’s likely that you may encounter some of the rare and endangered species birds along your trek.

How fit do I have to be?

This expedition classified as “Demanding” and includes longer trekking days on difficult terrain. Thus suitable for adventurous and stronger individuals with physically challenging and more suited to regular hill-walkers who are used to extended days and are competent over difficult terrain. However do not require technical mountaineering skills or previous experience.

What about meal?

We take care of all catering on your expedition, you are always welcome to assist if you wish to. If you have a special dietary requirements then you will have to advise us at the time of booking. A hot breakfast will be served around 7 or 8 am, lunch usually is simple, light and serve during mid day follow by a short rest. Dinner will be more extensive featuring pre dinner snacks and deserts.

What about altitude?

This is one of our most strenuous expeditions and going at an altitude of 4450 meters which is higher than the point of altitude sickness as per mountaineering standard which is 2500 meter. You should be careful as you going up, gaining altitude. There’s some evidence that taking acetazolamide (the former brand name of Diamox) two days before a trip and during your trip can help prevent altitude sickness.

What about guides?

We provide an English or Myanmar language speaking escorted leader plus an assistance local guide, who will also be able to speak the local hill tribe dialects. It will be rather difficult to arrange a language guide since this expedition require a special training and ability to deal with challenging trek.

What about First aid?

All our guides are qualified in wilderness first aid, and carry a basic medical first aid kit.

Is there any age or health limit to participate?

This program is suitable to any one with normal health and fitness condition. However older clients or clients with pre-existing medical conditions may require a doctor’s letter confirming their fitness for the trip. During your visit you are under the direction of your trip leader and he/she has total authority to determine your suitability to participate.
