Naga New year Festival is held annually for 4 days starting from January 12 after their harvest. It revenue is alternating among three Naga towns of Leshi, Lahe and Namyun in Naga Self-Administered zone.
The Naga New Year festival is social, but it is also to exchange previous year experiences; to make plans for the coming year and to discuss how to overcome difficulties. They pray for abundant crops and domestic animals and to have good weather. They worship to their deities by scarifying the animals. Varieties of Naga clans participate in this New Year festival wherever it is celebrated. Numerous Naga tribes spread throughout the Northwestern hills of Myanmar. Visitors can take a glimpse of traditional attire of Naga tribes at the festival. Clothing of Naga comprises a wide variety of shawls. Nagaland is popular for its unique shawls. During this festival, one can get unforgettable experience. If you haven’t seen them before, you will be surprised by seeing native Naga men and women dressed up in their traditional and ancient ethnic costumes a grand head-dress made of a rattan hat topped with monkey fur and two fangs of a wild boar and long hornbill feathers, with a string of tiger claws in his face. You can also enjoy their unique songs and dances that you may never have seen before.
The “WiHu Spirit” which protects the earth has been worship by Naga used to be one of the more important festival for Nagas. Today the Naga festival becomes an important state level celebration.
Pan (an hollow wooden boat) is a unique symbol for Naga and hunting is the most prominent art for all tribe which is being handed down by generation to generation.
